This is a whole new certification for dancers. The special certificate program in this world is conducted by a unique artist, Karim Nagi. And it will come out in Hong Kong this September. Dancers do not only know how to dance, but also need to understand history and culture about what they dance.
Here is the introduction about Karim Nagi Certificate Program. Lucky Asian dancers will have an opportunity to try this whole new meaningful program.
Purpose:
This program focuses on the cross-section between dance, music and culture. It was created to give the dancer an advanced perspective on performance and cultural literacy. The dancer will gain quantifiable skills in identifying musical themes and methods that influence Raqs Sharqi, a broader grasp of Arab Folkloric dance, Improvisational approaches, and detailed Cultural background. The goal is to give the dancer an education that allows her to communicate a cultural dance on an academic level, with greater depth and accuracy.
Background:
This program is conducted by Karim Nagi, a native Egyptian musician and dancer, with an English language based system and format. His performance experience exceeds 25 years. He was a faculty member at the New England Conservatory, and has presented lectures and conducted workshops in Harvard, Princeton and Yale universities. He has taught dance and music in 4 continents and has learned to codify and standardize an art form that previously had no universal system nor curriculum.
Curriculum:
The study for the Nagi Certificate system is divided into four tracks:
1) Rhythm & Maqam : the Arabic musical system of creating melody, rhythm, and songs.
2) Arab Folk Dance : the dances of the Arab world from villages and regional communities.
3) Anthropology : the history, customs, behavior, and repertoire of Arab communities.
4) Performance : improvisational skills for drum solo and taqsim, repertoire and choreography.
System:
By completing a course of 4 classes, one in each of the tracks above, the student is awarded a Rank. Rank "1" symbolizes a completion in a full course of 4 tracks (i.e. one class in Rhythm or Maqam, one Folk Dance Class, one Anthropology class, and one performance class). A student can continue to accumulate Ranks by taking more full courses of 4 tracks over time. Every time a student completes a course, they will be offered a 15-20 minute personal exam with Karim Nagi, at which he awards the Rank, or new Rank level, at the satisfactory completion of the exam. There is no limit to the height of Ranks a student can be awarded, nor is there a time limit for completing a Rank.
So, this Sept. in HK will be offer four tracks course for Rank 1. They will be:
- Track 1) Arabic Music – Sept.10 7:30-9:30pm
- Track 2) Saidi Dance – Spet.12 2:30-4:30pm
- Track 3) Oriental Dance History – Spet.12 6:00-8:00pm
